WCM: ‘Maybe Frank’ for an After Work Drink
WCM stands for wine, cheese and men. And yes I’m on a mission to find the best of the best in Sydney.
Now, I love a new venue as much as the next girl but when a new bar pops up on Bourke Street you can be sure that I will be first in line to sample what’s on offer.
Maybe Frank is a trendy new pizzeria and cocktail bar located at the top end of Surry Hills. While it certainly sounds central it’s not exactly easy to find.
“There it is” Miss A pointed down a narrow side street just off Bourke.
We tackled the uneven road in our black stilettos heading towards the gold signage in the distance.
“I need a cheese plate and a bucket of wine the size of my head.” It’s been a longggg day.
As we arrive at 6pm the place is virtually empty apart from a couple of Italian men. They ask us where we’d like to sit so we pick a table near the bar.
I don’t even look at the menu because I know exactly what I’m going to order. I ask for a glass of pinot noir and the cheese and meats board that I saw on their Instagram page (ick I’m such a Gen Y, I know).
The waiter shakes his head.
“Red we can do but no meat board tonight.” he says.
I feel like I’ve just been broken up with over text, by a guy I really like. All my hopes and dreams are immediately destroyed and I feel myself just glaring at him in disbelief.
“Tonight it is all you can eat pizza night” he tries to soften the blow with mountains of mozzarella.
Well that would be great if I was writing about the best wine, men and pizza in Sydney, but I’m not am I buster?
Being the cool girl that I am I accept the $20 unlimited pizza deal because well, I’m here now and I might as well enjoy that delicious offer. Pizza and wine it is then…
I very soon realise how much I love wine and how much wine can make all problems, especially problems of the champagne variety go away. My lovely friend agrees and then we are offered our first slice of pizza.
Prawn and fig.
When is the last time you called up your favourite little Italian place and was like “Hey, I’ll just get my regular prawn and fig pizza to go thanks”.
Ah I’m pretty sure never and I’ve ordered some pretty crazy pizzas in my time BUT as soon as I took a bite, I ate my words.
It was bizarrely delicious. By now a few more patrons had started to arrive. All women and no men…
But before I could think about the lack of men in my life we were presented with another slice. This time my favourite combo proscitto, rocket…and fig.
Fig must be their thing?
This slice was equally intriguing and delicious but my friend went without (she’s a classic pizza topping kind of gal).
The lack of ventilation on a balmy Summer’s evening soon got to us and we asked to move outside. As soon as we sat down on the terrace the vibe completely changed. The real cheesy, hearty pizzas came out and the people just started rolling in.
A very attractive group of young professional women took a seat behind us, while another group of friends tucked into their Christmas party dinner in front. We enjoyed every sip of wine and said yes to every single pizza down to the stray last slice!
You see at least with Brazilian BBQ they give you a block to indicate when you’ve had enough. Here, they just expect you to take it…a notion that I like a lot!
By 7:30pm the place was buzzing and I discovered a very handsome waiter, who came out to talk to a lady with a dog.
He quickly disappeared back into a different area of the bar. Don’t you hate it when the cute waiter hasn’t been allocated your table? Ok it’s time to ask for the bill.
Although I could of happily continued on drinking and eating into the night at Maybe Frank it was only a Tuesday after all. So after we paid the very modest bill my lovely friend Miss A decided to catch a taxi while I decided change into the ballet flats in my bag and stroll home down Bourke Street. On the way I called my dad.
“You know dad sometimes all you need is a bottle of wine and all you can eat pizza, and the stresses of life just melt away.”
Maybe Frank certainly wasn’t what I expected but maybe it’s exactly what I needed.
THE VERDICT: Maybe Frank, 417-421 Bourke Street, Surry Hills
Cheese Board Pizza: 8/10 While we were a little disappointed that the full menu wasn’t available every night, the pizza selection is absolutely mouth watering and the value for money is amazing!
The Wine: 8/10 Smooth, delicious and the staff know exactly what to suggest to go with your pizza.
The Location: 6/10 – Yes it’s on my favourite street in Sydney but there isn’t much of a view from this restaurant unless you like to look at the back of another apartment block.
The Men: 2/10 – Apart from the cute waiters, there weren’t any eligible bachelors hidden amongst the crowd. Close proximity to Oxford Street also means there are probably more men that prefer chorizo to prosciutto if you know what I mean.
The Women: 8/10 – A new category. While there were very little men, there was an abundance of lovely looking women…
Maybe that’s Frank’s secret…a lot of figs.
Cheese Pizza & Men Score: 7/10
In case you’re wondering THIS is Maybe Frank’s special meats board. I can’t wait to try it (on any night other than Tuesday).
